Kolkata Nurture Foundation to Commemorate World Suicide Prevention Day....
awareness and suicide prevention, is proud to announce its upcoming event in observance of
World Suicide Prevention Day on Monday, 11th September2023 at Calcutta Press Club.
Suicide is a global issue that affects millions of lives annually. More than 700 000 people die
due to suicide every year. On this World Suicide Prevention Day, the Kolkata Nurture
Foundation aims to shed light on the biological, psychological, and social causes behind this
critical problem. By focusing on these facets, the foundation aims to sensitize the public and
pave the way for effective prevention strategies.
Understanding the Complex Causes of Suicide:
The event will delve into the multifaceted aspects of suicide, exploring the biological,
psychological, and social triggers that contribute to its prevalence. Suicide occurs throughout
the lifespan and was the fourth leading cause of death among 15–29-year-olds globally in 2019.
Experts in the field will provide valuable insights into the underlying factors that drive
individuals to contemplate self-harm.
Kolkata Nurture Foundation's Comprehensive Approach:
The Kolkata Nurture Foundation is dedicated to making a difference in the field of mental
health and suicide prevention as suicides are preventable. The organization has outlined a
multifaceted approach to address these pressing concerns:
1. Research: The foundation is committed to conducting research aimed at better
understanding the root causes of suicide. With every fifth Indian to be an adolescent, the cost
of an adolescent dying by suicide is enormous. This necessitates an understanding of the
potential risk factors of suicidal ideation among adolescents. By gathering data and insights,
the foundation aims to develop evidence-based strategies for prevention.
Education and Awareness: Educating the public and dispelling myths surrounding mental
health is a top priority. Suicide is preventable and educating communities and schools on risk
factors, warning signs, and how to have conversations with students, staff, or loved ones when
they are struggling are an important part of that education. Through workshops, seminars, and
educational campaigns, the foundation intends to reach individuals of all ages, promoting
mental health literacy.
3. Treatment Services: Access to mental health services is a critical aspect of prevention.
Suicide can vary based on several geographic, socio-economic, cultural, gender, race, ethnicity,
and age-related factors which can complicate evaluating the effectiveness of services,
treatments, and supports. Despite these variations, however, there is substantial evidence to
inform the types of resources that can help reduce substance use, lessen symptoms of mental
illness, and improve quality of life. Kolkata Nurture Foundation plans to collaborate with
healthcare providers to ensure that individuals in need receive appropriate care and support.
Sensitizing the Community:
The event also focuses on sensitizing the community to the importance of mental health. By
sharing stories of hope and recovery, the Kolkata Nurture Foundation aims to reduce the
stigma associated with seeking help for mental health issues.
The Kolkata Nurture Foundation extends a warm invitation to members of the press,
community leaders, healthcare professionals, and the general public to join us in this important
endeavor to prevent suicide and promote mental health.
